I dreaded writing an artist statement for a long time. Not because it was hard but because I don’t like talking about myself. I didn’t believe I could write anything about myself that wouldn’t sound like a lie. When I looked up statements written by other artists, I realized that an artist statement isn’t a self-evaluation of my work but a summation of ‘why I do what I do.’ If I had to describe my art it would be this.
I’ve never made art for others. I’ve always made it for myself. I’m a storyteller, I create worlds, I chronicle their adventures and I share them with others. Because a story is meant to be told, not hold. There’s always going to be people who scorn, criticise and leave. That just makes the people who stay all the more valuable.
